Gunbalanya known as Oenpelli is located in Arnhem Land of the Northern Territory, was officially opened in late November 1989. Prior to 1989 its origins were in a small shed used for screen printing. The building that now houses the various functions of the Art Centre is long and flanked on either side by covered verandahs. The artists work on either side of the verandah, sitting on the ground and grinding their ochres.
Hailing from Arnhem Land the fine cross-hatching of Gumbalanya stands out to that of other art producing areas within Arnhem land. The ochre used to paint with on paper, bark and traditional regalia produces themes of animals and spirit being reflecting their anima faith. This close proximity to traditional themes creates a body of works with cultural integrity.
